Our deepest condolences to my Canadian cousins and their families for the loss of my lovely Aunty Joan. Big sister to my late dad Terry, sister-in-law to my late mum Renee, Aunty to me and my brother and sister, and to my husband Gareth. I'll always remember my aunty as being elegant, ever smiley and with a great sense of humour. The photo I have posted will always remind me of when we last met in Toronto after a great lunch and lots of chat and laughter. Rest in Peace, Aunty Joan, from Josie and family.

So sad to hear of the loss of such a wonderful lady! Joan and Mum were friends throughout the better part of their lives. Two giggling English girls whenever they got together…many memories and happy times! I’m so glad I talked to her after Mum passed a few months ago! Our condolences to all her family and friends! I will always remember her with much love! ❤️❤️❤️ Sheree Chard

Thinking of you all as you are dealing with Joan’s passing. I have such happy memories of her when meeting her so many years ago as my uncle emigrated to Canada with his wife, whom I had never met. We enjoyed each others company and she was always busy and happy. Tough as nails, too, when she broke her hip! I am sure stories and laughter with memories will be with you all for years. I am thinking if you all at this difficult time. Mavis Cole

As the true matriarch of our family, Joan was a star around whom the rest of us orbited. She and Uncle John came to Canada from England for their honeymoon—and never left. They had no sooner arrived than our mother flew to England with our younger sister, leaving John and Joan to “babysit” Mavis, 16, and me, 14, for the summer. Quite the challenge for newlyweds! At the time, I was obsessed with breeding and raising giant silk moths imported from all over the world, which (I informed Joan) needed to have the run of the house to get to know each other better. Joan called my bluff and confined my moths (and therefore me) to the attic. Enter the Law of Unintended Consequences. In due course, in the attic, different species of moths got to know each other REAL well, resulting in bizarre intergeneric hybrids—displays of which led to my being sponsored in trips around the world by the U.S. National Academy of Sciences. I have Joan to thank for that! She later led the way in female entrepreneurship in Toronto, opening more than one shop on Yonge Street to provide cheerful wallpaper options for interior design, including colourful images of butterflies—and giant silk moths. Auntie Joan, you will always be my star!

Condolences to the whole family. Joan was a wonderful kind woman, & my mother’s best friend for over 80 years! They grew up together in England, then re kindled their friendship again in Canada! What a friendship it was, to have for so long & no matter how much time had passed when they got together it was like they were never apart! I remember so many memories of them laughing and always telling old stories. Unfortunately we all reach this age at some time, but how wonderful it was to know my mother was 94 & Joan 96 when passing and funny not long apart! I know they are together again laughing & telling old stories! The 2 women who had heart, laughter & love to give! May they always live on in our memories. I’m sure your mom shaped you in many beautiful ways. Love is something that death cannot take! Her love lives on in all your families. You are all in our hearts.
