My deepest condolences to John's family, or as he was known to us at Notre Dame, Mr. Chyz. As a student there was always something going on around Mr. Chyz. A hockey game against the kids at Our Lady of Grace, or the hockey raffle tickets that he organized, or our baseball games that he umpired in the schoolyard during June, or his devilish jokes and tall tales. His favourite tall tale was how he was the cousin of William Shatner because he kind of looked like him. The only hint that you had that he was putting you on when he was telling the tale was the little twinkle in his eye. His hairstyle was always exactly the same, like he just came out of Rocco's Barber shop and he was on his way to somewhere special. But it was his big wide grin and his competitiveness that I remember the most about him.
I kept track of Mr. Chyz over the years as he ended up as the principal of St. Paul's school in Newmarket (circa 1988) where my mom taught. Mom would tell me some of the hilarious stories that occurred during those years and I remember John calling our house when my mom passed away shortly after she retired. It was a nice call under the circumstances and it meant a lot to the family that he did that. Mr. Chyz was one of those rare teachers that you remember vividly throughout your life. May God bless him and his immortal soul. RIP John.
Kevin Richardson and family.

I am sad to hear of the passing of John Chyz. I offer my deepest sympathy especially to Linda.
It is quite by coincidence that I found out of his passing.
I hope you don’t mind if I honour him by sharing a story.
I was a kid of around 14 years old when I first met John. Working at Baks Market. I absolutely loved my job. The people I met and the industry itself was thrilling - John and Linda were a part of that thrill - Linda the accountant - John drove a truck full of fruits and vegetables from the city to Bradford every Thursday in the summers.
We unloaded those trucks along with John. He quietly helped us become people - really grown up people - by working alongside with us. His quiet ways were welcomed in a world full of turmoil and excitement.
The heat of the summer was barely tolerable during these days and our John would sweat it out - pouring out of him - along with us.
So to you - John - I share my sadness in the very hopes that I can dream the dream of being with you and unloading those trucks once again.
And by sharing this story, the hope that I can usher you to the heavens. For you are one of the solid and great people who positively influenced my life.
David Delcourt. Barrie.

Mrs. Chyz and Family,
The last time I saw you (Mrs. Chyz) and Mr. Chyz was in the parking lot at the Bradford No Frills last summer. Mr. Chyz and I were in our respective automobiles, with the windows down. He looked over at me and I at him. I could tell he was having difficulty placing me, probably due to my facial hair and receded hairline, but I knew instantly it was him. That smile was contagious. He was waiting for Mrs. Chyz to return from shopping. She finally arrived, we all had a hug and a little chat about the families and he invited me to the house for a swim. I politely declined, but do regret not taking him up on the offer.
My deepest condolences.

Dear Linda, Stacie, John, James, Nettie, and Christine,
My deepest condolences to all of you on the loss of John—your husband, your dad and your brother. My heart goes out to you all during this incredibly difficult time.
I have so many fond memories of John that go all the way back to my childhood, when he and my dad would sing at family gatherings. Whether it was on Pacific Avenue or in Bradford, their laughter would fill the air and could be heard all the way down the street. Their joy was infectious, and I’ll always hold those moments close to my heart.
I’m so grateful that John was able to attend my parents’ internment in November. The cheerful, boisterous send-off he gave my dad was such a beautiful reflection of the lively spirit he carried with him, reminding us of the good times we shared.
I hope that the warm, happy memories you have bring you comfort in this time of grief. Sending love and hugs to each of you. You are all in my thoughts.
With heartfelt sympathy and love, Judy, Sheldon, Zach and Hailey

Though I didn’t see John often, whenever I did, his booming voice and contagious laughter always brought joy to those around him. I will always cherish the last time we were together at my Uncle John’s celebration of life—his hilarious speech, filled with fond and funny memories of their adventures, and his final “Hip hip hooray” send-off. It was a true reflection of his big presence, his gift for making others laugh, and his leadership, both as a principal and in life.
Beyond grieving his passing, I also mourn the loss of another connection to the bygone era of my grandparents and great-grandparents. With his mother and my great-grandmother being siblings, his presence was a living link to the stories, traditions, and spirit of the generations before us.
Sending my deepest prayers to Linda, Anastasia, John and James, his grandchildren, his siblings Nettie and Christine, and all of their spouses and children and loved ones.
May John be free from his earthly suffering and be reunited with our heavenly family. May God bless John, and welcome him into His heavenly kingdom.
