Obituary of Maria Wilhelmyna “Mary” Brons–Slykhuis

It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Maria Wilhelmyna (Mary) Brons–Slykhuis, on November 12, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.

Mary lived a beautiful, nearly 96-year-long life filled with resilience, warmth, and kindness. Born on November 20, 1929, in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, Mary married the love of her life, John Slykhuis Sr., in Eerbeek NL. Together, they immigrated to Canada in 1954 and built a loving family. Mary was blessed with a large and devoted family, including many grandchildren and great-grandchildren who brought her immense joy. Family was always at the heart of her life. Her journey was marked by both deep love and deep loss.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, John Sr., and by her sons Jeff (age 42) and John (age 65). Mary will be lovingly remembered by her children: John (predeceased) – predeceased by his wife Jill; Reneka Ferreri (Ross), Martin (Jeanette), Ron (Karen), Jeff (predeceased), Trish Bootsma (Ron), Peggy Greenhalgh (Rob) And by her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Erynn, Damien, Randy, Jason G, Joe, Marc, Leith, Sarah, Katrina, Joshua, Jamie, Amanda, Jason B, Stacy, Justin, Nicholas, Jayden, Rylan, Karleigh, Jami, Ava, Ally, Nora, Hudson, Becca, Grayson, Garrett, River, Tao, Sadie, Lyla, Spencer, Kiernan, Lennon, Abby, Avery, Chloe, Kasper, Salem, and Ripley. She will also be fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews.

Through every joy and sorrow, she carried herself with grace, strength, and compassion.

Mary spent many years in Aurora, Bradford, and Newmarket, Ontario, where she became a cherished part of each community. She worked for many years as a manager at Sears in Bradford and was an active member of the Seniors Club and Lioness Club. She also volunteered for years at Southlake Hospital. She loved to travel, enjoyed music, and bowled regularly—continuing until the age of 90! Above all, she cherished time with her family, which remained the most important part of her life. Mary will be remembered as a truly lovely, gentle woman who always had a smile and a hug for everyone.

Mary received exceptional care during her time in assisted living with York Region, and later at Lakeview Manor in Beaverton. The family extends heartfelt thanks to the dedicated staff at both residences for their compassion and kindness.

A private family cremation has taken place. A public Celebration of Life will be held in the spring, with details to follow.

Her legacy of love, kindness, and quiet strength will remain forever in the hearts of her family and all who knew her.

In Mary’s memory, donations to the Salvation Army or the Southlake Regional Health Centre Foundation would be appreciated by the family.
