Obituary of Ted Van Bakel

Ted peacefully passed away at Southlake Health, Newmarket on Friday, May 1, 2026 in his 85th year, after a short but incredibly valiant battle.

Beloved husband of Annie for 63 years. Loving dad of Teresa, Gail (Don) Maich and Jennifer (Jim) Gourlie. Proud Grandpa of Alex (Jessie), Daniel (Ashley), Logan and Kieran and bonus Grandpa of Nicole and Jenna. Cherished Great Grandpa of Haven. Ted will also be fondly remembered by his many brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews and friends.

He was the definition of strength, with a work ethic that never quit and a determination that carried through everything he faced. He had a witty sense of humor that could make anyone laugh at just the right moment, and a kindness that ran deep. He would help absolutely anyone without hesitation and spent many years volunteering in his community. He leaves behind so many memories filled with laughter, love, and resilience. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

A celebration of Ted's life will be held at the Mt. Albert Lions Hall, 5057 Mt. Albert Rd., Mt. Albert on Saturday, May 30, 2026 from 1-4 p.m.    

In Ted's memory, donations may be made to the Stronach Regional Cancer Centre at Southlake Health.
