Obituary of Fred Longthorne

Fred Longthorne 

August 16, 1940– July 29, 2026

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the peaceful passing of Fred Longthorne on July 29, 2026, at the age of 85, at Stevenson Memorial Hospital in Alliston. 

Fred was the beloved husband of Sandra for 61 years and loving dad of Jessica and her husband Glenn Harris. Fred will be greatly missed by family and friends. 

Fred started his policing career in Chatham and was posted to Bradford Detachment where he spent the majority of his 31 year career. Fred spent time in various roles within the OPP, one being Community Service Officer, where he organized and facilitated the VIP Program in elementary schools in the Bradford area. Fred loved his job until the introduction of technology. That was when he knew it was time to retire.

After fifty-six years living in Gilford, Fred and Sandra made the decision to move to Alliston two years ago to be closer to Jessica and Glenn. 

Memorial visitation will be held at Skwarchuk Funeral Home, 30 Simcoe Rd., Bradford on Monday, August 10, 2026 from 10 - 11 a.m.

 

A Masonic Service under the auspices of Simcoe Masonic Lodge No. 79 A.F. & A.M. will be held at Skwarchuk Funeral Home Monday, August 10, 2026 at 11 a.m. with the memorial service immediately following.

 

Special thanks to the staff and residents of Kingsmere Retirement Home in Alliston for their care, kind words and support. 

We are deeply grateful for the compassionate care Fred received at both Markham-Stouffville Hospital and Stevenson Memorial Hospital before and after his surgery and in his final days. 

We would like to express our heartfelt appreciation to the Skwarchuk family for their guidance and support during this difficult time. 

In honour of my dad, we invite those wishing to attend to feel free to dress in summer casual. As a dedicated sports fan, dad would appreciate seeing a few golf shirts or favourite sports jerseys in the crowd. 

In lieu of flowers, donations to Trinity Anglican Church in Bradford, Stevenson Memorial Hospital Foundation in Alliston or a charity of your choice in Fred’s memory would be sincerely appreciated.
