Obituary of Maria Odete Vicoso

Maria Odete Fernandes dos Reis Vicoso passed away on Saturday, August 8, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family, including her two daughters and two beloved sons-in-law. She was 82 years old.

Odete was born on October 28, 1943, in Lisbon, Portugal, to Francelina de Jesus dos Reis and Antonio dos Reis. She built a life centered on faith, family, love, and service to others.

She was the devoted wife of her beloved husband, José Vicoso, with whom she shared 60 wonderful years of marriage until his passing on May 5, 2023. Together, they built a loving family and created countless cherished memories.

Odete is lovingly remembered by her daughters, Paula Xavier (Eusebio Xavier) and Sandra Anaka (Tyson Anaka). She was a proud and devoted grandmother to Amanda Xavier-Sousa (Andre Sousa), Daniella Xavier Martins (Ellis Martins), Abigail Xavier (fiancé Jacob Madeira), and Daniel Anaka. She was also blessed with a great-grandson, Silas Xavier Sousa, who brought her much joy.

Family was at the center of Odete's life. Her greatest happiness came from being surrounded by those she loved. She was an exceptionally involved grandmother who played an important role in helping raise her grandchildren. After-school snacks were always ready, her kitchen was always welcoming, and preparing food for others was truly her love language. Her sons-in-law were never introduced as sons-in-law. To Odete, they were simply "my sons," a reflection of the deep love and acceptance she extended to her family.

Odete had many talents and passions. She was an accomplished seamstress with gifted hands that could sew, crochet, and embroider beautifully. She was also an excellent cook whose meals brought family and friends together around the table. Some of her family's fondest memories are of gathering together to watch The Sound of Music and Anne of Green Gables, traditions that brought laughter, comfort, and togetherness.

She found great joy in nature, animals, and gardening. One of her favorite places in the world was the family trailer at Whispering Pines in Sauble Beach, where she and José spent many happy years surrounded by family and friends. Those who knew her best knew that she was at her happiest there, creating memories with the people she loved most.

Odete was a loyal and faithful Jehovah's Witness, dedicating her life to Jehovah through baptism in the spring of 1974. Her faith was a guiding force throughout her life and a source of strength, hope, and comfort to her and those around her.

In her final years, Odete resided at Bradford Valley Care Community, where she received compassionate care from the nurses and personal support workers on the Heritage Floor. Her family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff for the kindness, dignity, love, and support they showed her.

Odete will be remembered for her big heart, unwavering devotion to her family, deep faith, and generosity. Though her presence will be profoundly missed, the love she shared, the traditions she created, and the example she set will remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.

She leaves behind a legacy of faith, family, kindness, and unconditional love that will continue through the generations she cherished so dearly. May her memory be a source of comfort and strength to all whose lives she touched.
