Obituary of William Robert Ballard

Passed away peacefully in his 97th year, with family by his side after a lengthy illness. He is survived by his loving wife Evelyn of 53 years, and sons, Robert, David (Sandi), Grant (Diana) and daughter Susan. He leaves behind his much loved grandchildren, great grandchildren, extended family, and sisters Emily Griffith and Olive Crighton. Special thanks to his dedicated caregivers, Marcia, Jerome, Analynne, Gina, Reynaldo and Abraham, for their compassionate care. Bob was born in Grenfell, Saskatchewan to Dr. W.G. and Mary Ballard. At an early age the family moved to Vancouver and his business life started early with milk and paper routes. Soon his family started making dog food in the family kitchen in which all participated. At the age of 18, he came to Toronto to be the salesman, but soon opened a canning plant and eventually built his own canning line. He was an innovator and forward thinking and interested especially in automation. His next adventure included acquiring a failed soft drink operation, but with time the first fully automated soft drink canning plant in Canada was successfully put into operation. Next to business, Bob had a love for horses. He rode on the Canadian Equestrian Team from 1947-1958, many of the years as captain. He always felt it an honor to ride for his country. A private family service will be held. A celebration of Bobs life will be held at RedCrest, Cardinal Golf Club, 17700 Keele St., Newmarket on Monday, October 18, 2010 at 1 p.m.  In lieu of flowers, donations to Southlake Regional Health Centre Foundation, Newmarket or to the Salvation Army would be very much appreciated. Arrangements entrusted to SKWARCHUK FUNERAL HOME, Bradford (1-800-209-4803)
