I had the pleasure of serving on Council with Marlene from 2010-2014. She was a great mentor and was very helpful in explaining the policy and procedures required in being a councillor. We shared an office and I sat beside her in the council chamber. She often provided excellent input into issues that had an important historical background. Marlene was a strong supporter of the volunteer Business Development committee and she was key in developing an“Attracting Dr’s to EG” video and a come to EG business video. I had the greatest respect for Marlene and she will be missed by her community. My condolences to Alvin and her family.
Best wishes

Marlene will be sorely missed.
She was such a classy, refined lady - a kind of renaissance woman that did many things with accuracy and precision. She was always well dressed and well groomed and carried herself with dignity. She was well spoken and polished.
She was a strong woman. She did not defer readily to others if she thought she was right and most of the time she was right. Wisdom comes with age, I guess. She had well defined convictions. She stood her ground.
She was the memory bank of East Gwillimbury council. She knew everything about East Gwillimbury, both past and present. She read everything - minutes of meetings, agenda items, documents and corrected grammar or syntax as well. She was well informed. She did not hesitate to point out discrepancies. In other words, she came prepared for every council meeting. As councils tend to do, issues are repeated. She reminded councillors of the facts and very graciously corrected them when councillors were misinformed.
I remember her as having a wonderful sense of humour and a good dose of cynicism. She “didn’t suffer fools gladly”.
Most importantly, she was loyal to the citizens of East Gwillimbury. She seemed to know everyone. She was generous with her time and would not hesitate to go out of her way to help people. She would listen to their concerns and when possible she would do what she could to address those concerns. For that she was awarded overwhelming mandates in every election.
In addition to all of this, she was an extremely talented seamstress. She made a quilt for me, that I will always cherish.
It was a privilege to have known and worked with Marlene. She taught me much.
She will be missed by many. Her passing is a great loss to our community. We thank her for her service.

Our sincerest condolences on Marlene's passing. Both Kim and I knew Marlene well, and worked with her on committees and community events over the years. Kim noted how much Marlene added to the E.G. Chamber of Commerce during the time Kim was President. I worked with and took counsel from Marlene on multiple community activities and always found her a wealth of information - even when we sometimes disagreed on things :-). She truly lives on in our hearts.
We are out of town and will not be able to attend the funeral, but will be thinking of all at the time of her celebration of life. Love, Doug and Kim Leitch

I recall Marlene as a concerned mother nervously making a deputation to council advocating for safe sidewalks on Yonge street so Holland Landing kids could walk or ride to the day camp at Anchor Park. She was well prepared and made a strong case. Later she was encouraged to run for council and she won. She was a hard worker and a full time advocate for our town. She will be missed.
