Jim was a wonderful man who had his own special way with people. He was very encouraging and helpful to me as a first year teacher colleague at St. Rob's. I will always remember his advice, kindness and good humour. May he rest in peace and my condolences to the family.

Jim was a wonderful man. His joy of life and continuing to learn and grow even with his advancing age is inspirational. My family and I have many fond memories of Jim. He gifted me with a book of his poems which I cherish. We met through the Tracker School. The gifts he gave while on this earthly plane live on in all those whose lives he touched. Much gratitude for Jim's life and having known him. Love and prayers to his family and friends. --Elizabeth, Bill, Kyle, and Katlyn Moes

Ryan and Family..........Ry your Pop was a dear dear friend whom I shared many laughs with either driving him to a doctor's appointment or taking him to the Optimist Hall for a meeting and a rousing game of Poker afterwards. Your Dad was a good winner but an amazing looser never ever complaing after the loss of a bet! Even when there was no chance of him winning a hand he would sometimes toss in another quarter and say "why not" just to keep it going and support the cause. Your Dad lived in a world of total Optimism, posiivity and focused his energy on the lives of others. We often spoke of your Mom to simply touch base about how she was doing. Ryan you were a Great Son to your Dad and he often told me about you, your Family and how much he wanted your Son to get his car He loved you very much.
Sir James will always have a special place in my Heart and I will miss Him forever. He was a "GREAT BUD" of mine.

I first met Optimist Jim when I joined the Optimist Club of Newmarket in 2001. We connected over our mutual careers: Jim was a retired teacher and I was teaching in King City. Every first Optimist meeting in September Optimist Jim would greet me with "Hey teach, how did it go?" as this was also the first day of school. I was always exhausted after this first day, but Optimist Jim's greeting always brought a smile to my face. Around the time of my father's passing 13 years ago, Jim presented me with one of his stones that he was so famous for. He even showed how to hold it in my hand for maximum comfort. Even though my purse is so heavy that I could use it for weightlifting, I still carry Optimist Jim's stone with me wherever I go. I hope heaven has stones for Jim to share.
Optimist Jim will be truly missed by us all; my condolances to his family and friends - Godspeed Optimist Jim.

Dear Ryan and Melissa,
I often think that people we have loved
and who have loved us,
not only make us more human,
but they become a part of us
and we carry them around all the time,
whether we see them or not.
And in some way we are a sum total
of those who have loved us
and those to whom we have given ourselves.

Grateful, Jim for our brief phone chats not long before you left this Earth.
God speed, my friend, God speed.

Ryan,
We extend our deepest condolences to you and your family. Caroline, Mary and I were deeply saddened to hear of your dads passing. He was a genuinely kind and caring man who always had time for his family and friends.
We have many fond memories of your dad from summer vacations with both of your parents in Keswick to Barbeques and Sunday dinners. We always looked forward to having conversations with your dad. He always made the time to talk with us to find out what was new in our lives and would always have some words of advice. Those memorable conversations later carried on with our kids.
Your dads infectious personality, love for life and family, his sense of humour, his laughter and his big smile will forever remain in our hearts. We were truly blessed to have had your dad in our lives.
Ryan, we are always here for you. If there is anything we can do or help out with don’t hesitate to reach out. Remember the good times to help you through the difficult times.
Hugs to all,
Caroline Marangoni, Mary Finlayson and Donna Caravaggio

Jim Gainer was my uncle.....my FAVOURITE uncle. When I was very young, Jim always showed up at mom and dad's with a box of Smarties for me and my younger brother. Jim always was smiling and laughing. He brought much joy to mom and dads house. He was a card shark extraordinaire!! Didn't matter what game, he played very well. Jim always brought some of his fellow Christian brothers to mom and dads and everyone enjoyed themselves. Jim loved being with people....didn't much matter who, as long as he was with others he was happy. I have many fond memories of Jim and many, many pictures, from when he was very young up until a few years ago. I will miss Jim very much. He was the last of my mother's siblings. Ryan, you had a great dad. Melissa, you had a wonderful father in law. Your kids had a great grandfather. (Jim had practice for that with me and my younger brother). Rest in peace uncle Jim.

Can a picture substitute for a thousand words?
This particular one of Jim Gainer - Jolly Green (Giant) - is so symbolic of his openness of heart and mind.
His love of Other, of Nature, and of New Ideas are so clearly expressed over the years in his actions as well as in his poetry.
Decades of friendship with Jim have been a privilege for all who found themselves in his orbit.

I was saddened to read of the passing of Jim. We taught together at Notre Dame Catholic School in Newnarket for six years. I always loved his sense of fun and how seriously he took his career in teaching. I remember well how proud and overjoyed Jim and Sheila were when they became parents to Sean. It was so nice to get reacquainted with all of you at St. Charles and to see Jim on Sundays for breakfast at the Grill. My pocket still holds the lovely stone he gave me to keep me in good stead each day. Love and prayers to all of you who will be missing this lovely man. Jayne Greer

Dear dear friend, can you believe our paths first crossed in 1949 at De La Salle College in Aurora? The boarding school we attended is still standing at the corner of Yonge and Bloomington. It is now used by the Ministry of Transportation. After that year, our paths took us to Ajax, Wexford, Teachers' College; then out to teach in schools in both Quebec and Ontario. I suppose Emma and I really got to know you when you and Sheila purchased a home next door to us on Sparrow Road in Newmarket. For a period of almost 30+ plus years we were next door neighbours and shared a plenitude of good times. Although you moved from that house, we never lost touch and your passing leaves us with a void in our hearts. Your last words to me were "Gerry, pray for me", spoken a few days before you died. Jim, I will flood the heavens with prayers. God bless you, Big Guy! Our condolences to Sheila, Ryan, Melissa, Nathan and Riley!

We met Jim over 20 years ago when we all volunteered for 1st Newmarket Scouts.Jim was looking for his replacement as the Group Committee Chair and Ken was a great candidate for the job. Jim also recruited us both to The Optimist Club of Newmarket. Jim certainly lived up to the title of "Optimist Member", never missing the opportunity to share a smile, his wit and friendship. He will be missed. R.I.P. Jim

James,
We shared a lot. Neighbors, Christmas’s, Family Cottage Vacations, even a trip to Florida to your spot down there. I used to eat Kraft singles cheese slices and ketchup sandwiches from your fridge for an afternoon snack after school. Your son is the best of friends to my brother and I. Growing up I admired respected you and will continue to do so as you take the next step in your travels.

My condolences to all of Mr. Gainer's family.
I was a student of Mr. Gainer for two years at St. Robert's High School. On top of his sunny disposition and welcoming smile, Mr. Gainer was sincerely concerned about the success of each of his students. His patience and dedication were greatly appreciated. He was an inspirational teacher. Thank you and rest in peace Mr. Gainer.
