Obituary of Phillip John Smalley

Of Mount Albert, passed away peacefully at Southlake Regional Health Centre, Newmarket after a brave battle with many complex health issues.

Beloved husband to Beth (Mitchell), his true partner in life who has lovingly cared for him for 53 years. Proud father of Michael (Kelly) and Jennifer (Randy).

Very special Papa to Mitchell, McKenna and Kellen. Son of the late George and late Gladys Smalley. Brother of late Anne (late Morley), Marietta (late Ken), Jim (Donna) and Pat (Rick). Uncle and great uncle to many nieces and nephews.

For over 50 years, Phil built and grew his family farming businesses, harvesting and processing millions of potatoes every season for Smalley’s Produce. Phil worked side by side with his father George, son Michael and later with his grandsons Mitchell and Kellen. He loved getting on the land in the spring and was relieved when the last potato was harvested each fall. Phil enjoyed many hobbies over the years from using his CB handle “Super Spud” to playing baseball and hockey to hunting and fishing. He later took up golfing and loved his winters at his home in the Florida sun. Phil and Beth shared a great passion for their classic Chevys. They attended many local, national and international shows with their classics, meeting and making some of their dearest friends.

Much love to the many friends and neighbours here and in the States, who have provided so much companionship for Phil over the years. A heartfelt thank you to the Heart Function Clinic at Southlake Regional Health Centre for your support and guidance over the past few years with Phil’s care. A special thank you to Cori-Lynn, PSW for your caring support this winter and Wai at Ben’s Pharmacy for your care and compassion. The family wishes to express their love and forever thankfulness to Danielle, an angel among us for checking in on Phil during his many hospital stays.

Private funeral service was held at Skwarchuk Funeral Home, Bradford on Saturday, April 3, 2021 followed by interment at Mt. Albert Cemetery.

A celebration of Phil’s life will be held at a later date.

In Phil’s memory, donations may be made to the Heart Function Clinic at Southlake Regional Health Centre or to the charity of your choice.
