I had the pleasure of working with John for almost 10 years. I was deeply saddened when I learned of his passing. He made work fun and I looked forward to going to work because of him. We ate chocolate together, bought each other coffee, and every Christmas, we would text each other "Merry Christmas ya filthy animal" from his favourite movie "Home Alone." Rest in peace John, you will be dearly missed.

I’m deeply saddened by the news of John’s passing. He was such a good friend that I’ve known over 30 years. I can still hear him pronouncing as I was approaching him, “oh there is the Duffer!” No matter how much time had gone by, we caught up immediately; he extended that gift to all who knew him. His joie de vivre was infectious and he always made those around him feel better about themselves. Our prayers are with you John - and calling here comes Kearnsie! Rest in peace; Love you, my man!

Sending my deepest condolences. John was an amazing partner to the Ottawa Catholic School Board over the past several years. I, personally connected with John over 10 years ago and with Kindergarten and math being my portfolio, there were many many orders and emails back and forth! His sense of humour, attention to detail and kindness were all traits we loved about John. He always went above and beyond and we all knew him as "Spectrum John"! I will miss the texts and emails. To John's family, his friends at the OCSB are keeping you all in our thoughts and prayers.

My deepest condolences to John's wife and family. I am just so heartbroken to hear of John's passing. I have known John since the early 2000's. He was so loved by the education community and the math community especially. He was such a funny, hard-working, compassionate and generous man. He always referred to everyone has "his friend". We chatted many times about work but also about family which mattered so much to John. I had texted with him a few times while he was in the hospital and I told him I was saying prayers for him. He responded saying "Please do pray for me my old friend. It's in HIs hands. Keep enjoying life, it is very fragile but yet beautiful." Thank you John for making all of our lives a little more beautiful. May you rest in peace and rise in glory. ~Scott Armstrong

John was one of a kind. I knew him for almost 18 years and in that time, John became my work dad. He gave me so much encouragement, advice and love over the years. He was with me for so many milestones in my life, marriage, my first house, children. He gently guided me through many of life’s challenges. His love for family and life was unmeasurable. I will miss our funny texts back and forth, chatting about the Beatles, David Bowie, Roy Orbison and the Bee Gees. John would serenade “I had the time of my life from the Dirty Dancing movie to me all the time while dancing around the office. He was the best. I’m so heartbroken for Linda and the boys. This is such a huge loss for so many. Kearnsie, thank you for giving me the time of my life, I will miss you so much.

Our sincere and heartfelt sympathy to Johns family from your friends at Polydron in the UK. Richard and Cyril worked with John for many years and we are truly grateful for all the brilliant expertise and unrivalled enthusiasm he showed for our company. There are so many words to describe John and none of them truly do his unique personality justice. With that in mind, let us try, he was vital, energetic, generous, exuberant, unforgettable, fascinating and helpful, that together with so many more words that escape me right now, sum up the man we will miss. More than all of this though, he was our friend and we will mourn his passing. To our buddy John, we will miss you very much, rest well, our dear friend.

I have known John for 20 years and I will miss him dearly. He was always so willing to support all of the conferences that I helped plan. He would go out of his way to make sure that all of the teachers felt supported and grateful for all that they did. I will always treasure the beautiful message that he would add at the end of an email, such as, “you’re the best”, “have a great day with a smile emoji”, “not a problem”, “ see you soon my friend”. John, rest in peace, my friend.

I am so deeply saddened to learn of the sudden loss of John. I worked with him for 4 years at Spectrum from 2002. He had the most positive attitude and left us in stitches daily - the type of human that you never forget. He was so proud of his children, sharing their accomplishments and rushing out the door to attend sports events.
My heart goes out to his family, co-workers and colleagues. Let's keep a little John with us and always look to laughter to get us through.

I worked at Spectrum for a short period and John was one of the nicest guys, despite being a Montreal Canadien fan, lol. I wish to extend my sincere condolences to his wife, his 4 sons and all of his family and friends.

John’s enthusiasm and smile could light up even the largest conference hall. He always had a kind word to say and remembered everyone . He was generous and thoughtful and his presence will be greatly missed . We shared stories of summers on Lake Huron and about raising boys .
My deepest condolences to his family , in particular his wife and children.

I attended a conference with John in February. As we had done at many prior conferences, we chatted and joked with each other. We both enjoyed being able to share the time together after so long and looked forward to meeting again at the OAME conference. Hearing that he had passed was a great shock. He had been a friend to all of us in the math education community for a very long time and will be sorely missed.
I offer my personal condolences to John’s family, especially his wife and children.

John was a great friend to OAME (Ontario Association for Mathematics Education). Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. At our conference on Friday, we paused and remembered him. Aside from being a great salesman, he was a special friend many of us looked forward to seeing every year. There is a hole in our organization and many peoples' hearts.
