I had the privilege of working with Wil for many years in Aurora. Wil and I worked closely together on many projects around Lake Simcoe, a lake and watershed he cared so deeply about, and tirelessly acted on those values in its advocacy. Wil and I shared many laughs and many long debates about fishing and fisheries along the way. We shared many memorable moments, battling and defeating water soldier on the Black River, re-opening the cisco fishery on Lake Simcoe with the Lake Simcoe Fisheries Stakeholder and Managers committees, wild rice restoration, Muskie and Walleye monitoring, operation bait bucket days, and an amazing trip together to Winnipeg for an invasive species conference.
He challenged me 'not to sweat the small stuff' and showed everyone how to turn 'No' into a 'Yes' with his zest for action on the ground in fisheries management. He bridged the gap between resource users and resource managers in ways few people could do with his honest and authentic demeanor. He grounded the ministry with the anglers perspective and carried the angling community's trust. He challenged his fellow staff to lead by example through action and he cared deeply about everyones well-being in the office. He was so generous with his time and care for others, and the free fishing gear always seemed to be close by. He provided much fatherly advice and reassurance on raising two boys, as I sometimes pondered whether I was doing the right thing with my boys. He made the hard days better, and the good days, great. I will always fondly remember my time with Wil and will miss him greatly. I send my deepest condolences and support to Loretta, Izaak and Tyler and the entire Wegman family.

I will never forget my uncles kindness, he was one of the best people I'll have ever known. One of my favorite memories is when uncle wil picked me and my cousin up and took us over to his house for a sleep over, him and my auntie were so excited because they would finally have the chance to see what it's like to have 2 girls instead of the boys.. we got SOOOO spoiled that night, but we were always spoiled by auntie lor and uncle wil. Another memory is always playing on the boat, but in the driveway. LOL. Yes the funnest times on the boat were in the driveway. Haha
Until we meet again, love you always ❤️

Wil was a wonderful friend and mentor. Like so many others, he took me under his wing of positivity at Aurora District MNR. He always had a a smile, was always willing to help and was always looking for an excuse for us to get out in the field! We became good buddies and stayed in touch. I will miss him and will think of him every time I go camping in Killarney, a place we both loved.

I only met Wil on two occasions while tagging along with my daughter on fish stocking trips to Aurora District but I think whether you knew him for a day or for your entire life you got who he was. He was cheerful and positive and so passionate about fish stocking success. The first time I met him I honestly thought he was a bit kooky having walleye netted into plastic tubs full of water and wading out into waist deep water with hip waders to ease the young fish into the lake. Those fish could have been piped in and the whole thing done in minutes but it was Lake Wilcox and Wil probably thought they needed some extra love and care to survive in that lake. His energy was infectious. He wasn’t kooky at all! Just a genuinely unique individual who was passionate about fish and people. As a fish technician at the White Fish Culture Station my daughter had a great working relationship with Wil and their admiration and respect for each other was obvious to me from the get go(photos from 2019 at Bond Lake). I have missed seeing Wil on more recent stocking trips and I can’t begin to imagine the void he has left in his family and with his friends and colleagues. My condolences to all of you. Another good one gone way too soon. This planet could use a few more Wil Wegmans. God speed Wil❤️

Dear Loretta
Although I never met your husband Wil, you always spoke so highly and lovingly of him. I remember you once telling me that he always saw the bright side and never griped about anything. What an amazing thing to be able to say about someone with whom you have spent so many years. In reading through the incredible tributes that people have posted, I can see that he was held in similar esteem by not only his family, but so many of his colleagues and friends. That is the true measure of a life. While I know that this has been an incredibly difficult year for you and your family, I am sure that your husband felt blessed to have you and your boys as an unwavering support by his side. I want you to now know that we all support you. May Wil rest in eternal peace.
Much love, Patricia

Wil, although we hadn’t chatted since about 2019 on a MNRF office visit about coming to our camp one day, I wish to thank you for some of the fondest early teen through late teen memories of sharing countless hours in the outdoors hunting and fishing. Thank you for that, I remain addicted to it. Life took us in different directions thereafter, but I have always admired, respected, and learned from your deep connection to the land, its flora and fauna. A “Hall of Famer”, respected voice of nature and fishing, a fine father, family man and husband - we’ll miss you. We have a special place up at camp, we’ll memorialize you in honor there, with my dad, Kathy’s dad and others who have had an impact on my life. Sending our deepest condolences, Gary Foch, and our family, Kathy, Dan, Stef, Nora, Kyle, Nicole, Fin and Eli

Dear Wegman Family, You do not know me, I live just around the corner from You. My sincere condolences to the entire family for the loss of Wil. I met Wil through a number of his fishing seminars, and occasionally we would bump into each other on neighborhood walks. Wil always had a friendly smile and a hand shake as well as an encouraging word to offer. One of the best ways I got to know Wil was through his always, "Fascinating" articles in the Lake Simcoe Living Magazine. I learned so much from the information he researched and wrote on. My Heart was grieved to hear of his passing. Wil was an inspiration to me and I'm sure, to all those that knew him.
Praying our Precious Lord Comfort and Carry You in and through this difficult season.

Dear Wegman Family,
It is with heavy hearts that we reach out, in the wake of the passing of Wil Wegman.
Wil was an individual whose life was guided by deep devotion to his family and friends alike.
Beyond his dedication to his family, Wil's passion for fishing was an integral part of his identity.
This passion wasn't limited to himself; he eagerly shared it with others, cultivating an appreciation for the sport in young and old alike.
The essence of fishing - the patience, the perseverance, the deep respect for nature - was reflected in the way Wil lived his life.
In these difficult times, we can find some comfort in remembering the incredible man Wil was.
As we navigate our grief, let us celebrate his life, cherish the memories we shared with him, and strive to uphold the values he embodied.
Wil's spirit lives on in the stories we tell, in the love he showed us, and in the peaceful solitude of a quiet fishing spot.
Each time we cast a line into the water, we'll remember his smile, his wisdom, and his undying love for life.
In mourning his loss, may we also find strength in the beautiful legacy Wil Wegman has left behind.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this challenging time.
With deepest sympathy,
The Foch Family

Wil was such an amazing person. The first time we ever spoke it was about bass and science (obviously). We were instantly friends and I’m sure this story has played out for so many others, how could you not be friends with him? He was such a pleasure to be around. When I worked at the MNR I would go into his office to talk about work (briefly) and then as soon as he even sensed I was about to talk fishing, his face would light up. Not only did he love fishing, he loved seeing others enjoy it just as much as him. His passion for the outdoors was unrivalled and inspiring. I will always cherish our banters, the times we fished together, worked together and the bond we shared. RIP my friend <%}}}}<

My memories start in 77’ back in high school. Wil was an adventurer and introduced me to back country camping, fishing and hunting.
Camping in a small tent Wil would always read before sleeping. He would read out load which always put me away into dreamland. Back then summer’s were spent camping and fishing. We came across a boat once with the drain plug missing. Wil found a stick and plugged the hole with cat tails. We went fishing in it and didn’t sink. Even when we were mikes from town Wil would make that extra effort for Sunday Church. Man he found some brilliant old churches. Singing around the camp fire to Jim Croce or Simon and Garfunkel was pretty cool too. I was with Wil when he met Lorreta the Love of his life and I couldn’t be happier for him. So many great memories with a great friend. I cherish them all.

I had the pleasure of working with Wil in Aurora District MNR from 2015-2019. In those short years we formed a friendship that carried on, and that I will consider one of the strongest in my life.
Wil’s fishing accolades speak for themselves, and his fingerprints are all over MNR programs, like stocking, tagging, and learn to fish, that will continue to enhance fisheries and keep people excited about the sport. But I will remember Wil most for his kindness, selflessness, and positivity. We could all take a page from Wil’s book on those character elements.
One story I was thinking about recently was the adventures of “the A team” on the Black River. Carolyn, Wil and I had been working on eradicating a new small population of an invasive plant, water soldier, but we couldn’t shake the feeling that there were more plants out there. So we spent a day travelling upstream and checking every riverbank, pool, and marsh edge, determined to get to the next major dam. Let’s just say we didn’t realize the challenge ahead. But Wil never met a challenge he didn’t give 100% towards. We spent the day getting out of the boat to walk it through shallow areas, Wil pulling the motor in and doing the limbo when we came to a bunch of cedars down across the water course, and all of us just laughing at the spots we got into while finding a way through them. And we were rewarded by not finding any plants after all that! Having someone who perseveres and finds humor during a field day when things don’t go as planned is crucial, and Wil was that guy to so many people.
I will miss him dearly.
