Obituary of Richard McKay

Richard McKay, the bravest man we were blessed to know has passed away at the age of 73 after a difficult battle with lung cancer and COPD on September 18, 2023 at Margaret Bahen Hospice, Newmarket.  Rick was diagnosed with cancer and COPD in early 2020 and put on a brave face and fought extremely hard from the first moment. Rick did not let his diagnosis define him and instead lived out his final years being the best man he could be to his family.

Rick is survived by wife of 51 years Kathy, his daughters Erin (Jonathon) and Colleen (Robert), his grand-babies Theo and Arya, his sisters Cheryl (Rick) and Carolyn, his nephews Shawn and Brian (Cindy) and the entire Ferragine side of the family (Tony, Christine, Peter, Amanda, Aeowyn and Anthony).  Rick is predeceased by his father and mother Alan and Joy as well as his younger brother Stephen (Ken).

Rick spent much of his career as a salesman at Don Coffey Sales and later finished his career at The Home Depot in Bradford, working in the pro desk department assisting local contractors from Bradford as well as in the flooring department, where he loved to play pranks on his co-workers.

Rick had an infectious personality and is fondly remembered by all who knew him as one of the most kind and funny people with the ability to make anyone smile.

Please join us for a celebration of Rick upstairs at The Bradford and District Community Centre (the old arena) at 125 Simcoe Road, Bradford on October 6, 2023 from 6pm-9pm.

A special thank you goes out to Dr. Alison Ransom and the entire cancer care team and well as the entire staff at Margaret Bahen Hospice for their outstanding support and care in his cancer journey.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation be made to the Margaret Bahen Hospice in honour of Rick. Donate Here.
